He who has much to give is fulfilled only in complete solitude ... American and British writers, including Lilian Hellman and Robert Lowell, protested to the Nigerian government and Soyinka was released ... The Man Died (1972) describes his time in prison. The book was banned in Nigeria. Madmen And Specialists, written in 1970, is Soyinka's most pessimistic play. It was about the inhumanity of man and the pervasive corruption in the power structures... Like the writer and human rights activist Ken Saro-Wiwa (1941-1995), Soyinka criticized the corruption that the oil industry had brought to Nigeria. Saro-Wiwa was hanged despite international protests... He was one of the most vocal critics of the concept of Negritude, which is associated with Leopold Senghor, the writer and former president of Senegal... Soyinka defends the idea that the West should make reparations for crimes committed against the African people ... Some people believe that the Nobel Prize makes you bulletproof. "I never had that illusion," Soyinka once said ... (P.A.C.)

He (Mugabe) is one of those dictators who wants to die in office and will suppress all dissenting views in the cruelest way possible - by killing his opponents, torturing them and burning down their houses ... (Soyinka in a CNN interview, 2001)
