Interpretation of dali48

Martinson's later years were shadowed by criticism of the younger leftist generation, and increasing demands that writers should engage politically (? - This is not the task of writers! - There is only one exception in order to warn of neo-fascism etc! - d.48) - The attacks of O. Lagercrantz, S. Delblanc, and K. Vennberg depressed Martinson deeply and he was hospitalized - The Nobel Prize did not ease his bitterness and feeling of isolation - He tried to commit ritual suicide by "seppuku", but only managed to hurt himself very badly - In 1954 he received an honorary doctorate at the University of Göteborg. Martinson died in Gnesta (Sweden) on February 11, 1978... (H. Martinson, Peg. Auth. Cal.)

Martinson's writings mirror many of the grat issues of the 20th century - These are social injustices and dictatorships, war and peace, commercial culture and the culture of the automobile, nuclear weapons and environmental destruction - Motifs from modern science find their way into his poetry. Martinson's realm of ideas is enriched by scientific theories, and the language of science is evident in his poetry. In this respect, he is an innovator, even in an international perspective - Harry's (Martinson) growing-up years were filled with difficulty and insecurity - More than once he ran away from homes and schools - Betty never returned to Sweden. Harry's longing for his absent mother left deep emotional scars upon him - "I grew cold at my childhood hearth" ... (from: "Flowering Nettle")

It is a book about the feeling of being an outsider, experiencing guilt, and being worried and afraid - It is also a book about discovery and about finding ways to interpret and understand the world - "Flowering Nettle" tells not only about social ills and unhappiness, but also about how Martinson's curiosity about the world is awakened ...
