27.10.2008 - Interpretation of dali48

Youth memories is the story of a visit by the protagonist to the sister of his paternal grandfather, the last bearer of the family tradition of the lost property in Mauritius (see my parents' house in Steinbach etc. - d.48), who leaves her memories to him, which the author will carry on ... (Le Clézio, bio-bibliographic note, 2008)

Language as Belonging. Le Clézio has said that the French language is the only place where he feels a sense of belonging (for me it's German and English etc. - d.48). He is someone who has always lived on the edge, and in-between (see between all stools etc. - d.48), and is hard to identify with a single locality. Itinerant from childhood, he has continued to travel, and now divides his time between New Mexico, on the frontier between North and South America, Nice, on the very edge of France, and Mauritius, a small island where the confrontation of land and sea is inescapable. Coming from a line of emigrants and immigrants, his family is dispersed all over the world. - "Writing for me is like travelling", says Le Clézio, who shows us that we are all emigrants, that we all face futures that are both liberating and terrifying. - They (the early novels) present a bleak picture of modern western urban existence, as one of alienation (see e.g. Herbert Marcuse etc. - d.48), aggression (see Hacker etc. - d.48) and enslavement to materiality (Les géants). - His experience in Panama (1970-74) developed his thinking about the limits of western rationalism and its dangerous devaluation of emotions and spirituality, and also of the natural world (see extinction of dying bees & other species etc. - d.48) ...
