June 23, 2012 - A well-developed "false self"... by on HP

26.04.2001 - Interpretation of dali48

People who lose themselves in relationships are ultimately afraid to even... - and that's understandable - They have had the experience that when they love to lose so... - that they feel quite exhausted by this... - These people need to understand - that their primary obligation has to apply to the own... - You need to make yourself No.1 in your... - You have to fight to the knife for every fiber of your... - No matter what it costs - what other people think - say or do - no matter how hard the struggle is - which is the only path that is worth to pursue...
And most confusing:
People with a weakly defined sense of... - tend to have a well-developed "false self" - This false self is an "inner confidence man" - who tells us who we are - and how we live...
And nevertheless it remains deep within a feeling of... - an emptiness that begins to show... - when we are alone for too long... (Carter / Sokol)

True self and false self are terms introduced into psychoanalysis by D. W. Winnicott in 1960. Winnicott used the term "True Self" to describe a sense of self based on spontaneous authentic experience, a sense of "all-out personal aliveness" or "feeling real"...
Helene Deutsch had described the "as if" personalities - who have succeeded in substituting "pseudo contacts" of manifold kinds for a real feeling of contact with other people...
Freud himself, with his late theory of 'the ego as constituted in its nucleus by a series of alienating identifications' - had produced a theory of 'the Ego, which does bear some comparison with the False Self'...
Erich Fromm, in his ''The Fear of Freedom'' distinguished between original self and pseudo self - the latter being a way to escape the loneliness of freedom - at the cost of losing the original self...
Carl Rogers had independently highlighted Kierkegaard's much earlier claim that 'the deepest form of despair is to choose "to be another than himself" - On the other hand "to will to be that self which one truly is - is indeed the opposite of despair," and this choice is the deepest responsibility of man'...
It has been suggested that 'in pathology, Winnicott's distinction between "true and false selves" corresponds to Balint's "basic fault" and to Fairbairn's "compromised ego"'...
Alexander Lowen identified narcissists as having a true and a false, or superficial, self - The false self rests on the surface, as the self presented to the world - It stands in contrast to the true self, which resides behind the facade or image...
James F. Masterson argued that all the personality disorders crucially involve the conflict between a person’s two “selves”:
The false self, which the very young child constructs to please the mother - and the true self - The psychotherapy of personality disorders is an attempt to put people back in touch with their real selves...
It has been suggested of Wuthering Heights - that 'the relations of the true and false self, and particularly the struggle of the true self to break forth - create the underlying psychic drama of Brontë's novel'... (Wikipedia)

The self is an individual person as the object of his or her own reflective consciousness. This reference is necessarily subjective, thus self is a reference by a subject to the same subject. The sense of having a self—or self-hood—should, however, not be confused ...

An alter ego (from Latin, "other I") is another self — a second personality within a person. It is also called leading a double life. The term "alter ego" was first used ...

True self and false self are psychological concepts often used in connection with narcissism. The concepts were introduced into psychoanalysis in 1960 by ...
