02.09.1997 - Interpretation of dali48

People who steal - the heart is full of fear ... (Hofuku)

Even an angry fist - does not hit a smiling face ... (Master Hakuin)

Life paints itself on the canvas called time - and time does not repeat itself - once passed, gone forever! - So also the action - once done, never again undone (therefore never acting spontaneously - first thinking etc. - d.48) ...
We can not take back what has once been done - indeed, we can not even undo - what ever happened by our consciousness...
"Zen" is therefore only to be understood - as long as something is just happening - neither before nor after ...
There is indeed more truth in a beat or kick - than in wordy discourses ...
A day without self-determined manual work: e.g. cleaning, cooking, collecting, cultivating, gardening - is a day without food - The monks in Zen monasteries never give way to idleness...
Quietism = renouncing active action - mystical-contemplative religious direction ...
Conviction is gained through experience - rather than abstraction! - The "attestation" of an idea or truth by actual experience - is something quite different from a mere intellectual judgment - When Master Eckhart says that one must pour in love what one meditates inside oneself - one would in Zen "replace the word "love" with "work" - the actively concrete expression of love ...
The idea that mystics are dreamers and stargazers is without foundation - and should be abandoned! - Mystic orientation and practical sense are perfectly compatible - True mysticism must be practical ...
Whoever takes the life of a Zen monk as an example - will certainly lead a very, very simple life ...
In Buddhism, the greed for possession is one of the worst evils of which a man can be afflicted - In fact, the desire to possess - is one of the main reasons for the misery in the world - And how much bitter enmity is between the powerful and the possessing people - and the poor ones... (D.T. Suzuki)
