"The bad novel aims to please by flattering, whereas the good one is an exigence and an act of faith! - But above all, the unique point of view from which the author can present the world to those freedoms - whose concurrence he wishes to bring about is that of a world to be impregnated always with more freedom... (from What Is Literature, 1967)

In a godless universe life has no meaning or purpose beyond the goals that each man sets for himself! - In Being and Nothingness Sartre argued that an individual must detach oneself from things to give them meaning...

A writer is always a watchdog or a jester, but the primarily function of a writer is to act in such a way - that nobody can be ignorant of the world: a novelist cannot escape engagement in political and social issues. The reader brings to life the literary object - it is not true that one writes for oneself...

The O.A.S. (Organisation de l'Armée Secrète), engaged in terrorist activities against Algerian independence - exploded a bomb in 1961 in Sartre's apartment on rue Bonaparte - it happened also next year and Sartre moved on quai Louis-Blériot, opposite the Eiffel tower...

From 1973 the philosopher suffered from failing eyesight - and near the end of his life Sartre was blind... (J.P. Sartre, PAC)

Furthermore, since the conferment of past prizes did not, in his opinion, represent equally writers of all ideologies and nations - he felt that his acceptance might be undesirably and unjustly interpreted - Mr. Sartre closed his remarks with a message of affection of the Swedish public... (J.P. Sartre, Announcement 1964)

Sartre's existentialism may be understood in the sense that the degree of hapiness - which an individual can hope to attain is governed by his willingness to take his stand in accordance with his ethos and to accept the consequences hereof - this is a more austere interpretation of a philosophy admirably expressed by Nobel's contemporary, R.W. Emerson: 'Nothing is at last sacred - but the integrity of your own mind!' ... (S. Friberg, Caroline Institut)

In his philosophical view atheism is taken for granted - the "loss of God" is not mourned. Man is condemned to freedom - a freedom from all authority, which he may seek to evade, distort, and deny but which he will have to face if he is to become a moral being - The meaning of man's life is not established before his existence - Once the terrible freedom is acknowledged, man has to make his meaning himself to a role in this world, has to commit his freedom - And this attempt to make oneself is futile without the "solidarity" of others! ... - They (Le Mur, La Nausée) dramatically express Sartre's early existentialist themes of alienation and commitment, and of salvation through art... (J.P. Sartre, Biography 1964)
