The Snow Dance Part 4 ... by Golden Snow

The day started out fine, I was content and made myself busy most of the morning ... I then decided to take a walk ... finding myself on a dirty road ... I was soon discovered ... 

I was told if I ever ran away again I would be taken to a home so far away I would never see my Mom again ... I tried to do the things I was told doing my chores and being quiet ... I knew if I opened my mouth I would be in trouble ... 

I missed my Dad, he was always happy and my Mom smiled and laughed a lot ... my step-father was now hitting her around and calling her a ...

September nights were getting cold and I needed to find a place to sleep at night ... I did not hide during the day now and was content to curl up in the woods for protection and warmth ... 

One night I came into a yard ... there was a small building there ... I tried the door,  it opened ... it was a place to store wood ... I could sleep here ... a voice behind me chilled me and as I turned and said: "I am looking for a place to sleep tonight" I looked into the big brown eyes of an Indian lady with long black hair ...

My dreams that night were filled with hiding ... you know in dreams when you cannot run and everything moves slowly ... I kept trying to cover up so I would not be found and woke several times pulling the blanket over me ... Mary hugged me and I fell asleep again ... I woke with the sound of wood crackling in the wood stove Mary stood making breakfast ... she turned and smiled ... come on lazy bones let's eat and get the wood in, weather is changing and it's cool ... breakfast was warm and good Mary just looked at me and smiled ... she was quiet and I liked that ... she never mentioned my step-father's visit... 

A couple of weeks passed and Mary mentioned school for me. She said a school named Model Farm was just a ways down the road, and she would take me there and come back for me ... I was not happy about school I was afraid of everyone ... I loved to learn and read, but I did not want to go to school ... 

I sat quietly ... we were sitting on the sew bench together talking when a car drove in the yard ... two women got out of the car and came toward us ... Mary stood up and waited for them to come over to where we were ... I felt like I was frozen I could not move ... my heart started to pound again ... They asked: Are you Mary?" She answered "yes" ... I have seen her hands tremble and my heart beat faster ... I got up and held on tight ...
