40 000 species on land, at sea and in the air were studied by the experts on their susceptibility. - 16000 of them were threatened with extinction according to the United Nations Environmental Program in 2007...
Almost three quarters of the earth's surface is covered by oceans. But over-fishing, acidification of the oceans as a result of climate change, pollution (see Gulf of Mexico, 5/2010 etc. - d.48), the noise (see ship sonars, etc. - d.48) and overfertilization make it difficult for the maritime ecosystem...
The upcoming biodiversity summit should change something that will take place in October (2010) in Nagoya / Japan...
It is said again and again, you know more about the back of the moon than about the deep sea ...

Not only the diversity in distant lands is threatened, but also formerly widespread breeds on our doorstep (see e.g. bee mortality since ca.2010, see the annihilation by windshields, leaf blowers, etc. - falling leaves are not dirt, but food for "flora & fauna" etc. - d.48)...
"X:enius" shows that even familiar everyday animals like the sparrow can suddenly end up on the list of endangered species in our modern world. - In addition, the speakers explain that saving one species is easier than to resettle one extinct species in their former habitat, see the example of the Rhine salmon...
Paradoxically, sometimes the growing environmental awareness threatens biodiversity: Medicinal plants are in vogue - but uncontrolled wild plant collection eradicates almost a few species of plants. At the Millennium Seed Bank, the seeds are collected for their conservation... (ARTE, 10/2010)
