12/03/2010 - Interpretation of dali48
Everyone likes "Flipper". - Dolphins are in the ranking of the most popular animals near the top. That alone makes them attractive to wildlife parks. - They are beyond the aesthetic mammals and capable because of their intelligence to artistic excellence. From the perspective of animal rights - activists say - a deadly combination. It has long been calling for dolphins not to keep them in captivity (see well-intentioned ideal demands, but which can also be counterproductive (I prefer dolphins in captivity, which can produce sympathy for themselves and their conspecifics in the humans - instead of the myriad of "free" dolphins which are starving in the world's oceans - and are dying in drift nets, or are slaughtered as competitors for food, etc. - d.48) ...
In the wild, the animals swim up to 100 kilometers a day and dive up to 300 feet deep ...
The now for the Oscar nominated film "The Cove" shows cruel dolphin hunts - and 1000s of dying animals (see I.B. Singer's comparison with Treblinka, etc. - d.48). Only the best will be sold - for up to 150,000 dollars ...
"Zoos are academic institutions - in which the animals would be researched" (after my 62-years of knowledge and experience, I guess only ca. 25 - 33% of science as constructive, etc. - d.48) ... (A. Winkler)
However, currently there is a change in thinking. Mr. Adler (see zoo in Muenster) points out that this had nothing to do with pressure from outside, but with his care for the animals ...
According to Tanja Breining of PETA one could try in Israel to get them slowly used to the liberty - in large outdoor pools (the Israeli example in a TV show, has convinced me at most, where the dolphins can swim through a loophole in the open sea, yet voluntary return, etc. - d.48). "Or you give them their charity in large outdoor enclosures, for example, in Holland", says Ortmüller of WDSF ... (Rhine Post, 08.03.2010)
I choose the lesser evil - a compromise in which the dolphins have larger chances for a long-term survival ... (dali48)
Dolphins are marine mammals closely related to whales and porpoises. There are almost forty species of dolphin in 17 genera …
They are found worldwide, mostly in the shallower seas of the continental shelves, and are carnivores, eating mostly fish and squid. The family is the largest in the order, and evolved relatively recently, about ten million years ago. Dolphins are among the most intelligent animals, and their often friendly appearance and seemingly playful attitude have made them popular in human culture.
Etymology:
The name is originally from Greek delphís, which was related to the Greek delphus, "womb". The animal's name can therefore be interpreted as meaning "a fish with a womb". The name was transmitted via the Latin delphinus (the romanization of the later Greek delphinos), which in Medieval Latin became dolfinus and in Old French daulphin, which reintroduced the ph into the word. The term mereswine has also historically been used … (Wikipedia)
