17.09.1997 - Interpretation of dali48

The motivation in all different systems of religious practice is similar - love, sincerity, honesty - The lifestyle of practically all religious people is frugality... (Dalai Lama)

But when I come to Europe or North America, I see that under the beautiful surface there is still a great deal of misery, mental and physical restlessness... - This shows that material progress alone is not the full answer to human life - If we attach great weight to the external differences - culture, ideology, faith, race, skin color, prosperity and education, and if we allow clear, rigid discrimination - we only contribute to the suffering of human society - These very small but then exaggerated differences follows a conflict-laden atmosphere...

Though we are so intelligent and powerful, strong enough to exploit peoples or destroy the world: we lack true goodness and love! - If you have in a small family, even without children, all an open heart for each other, it creates a peaceful atmosphere! - If only one of them becomes annoying, it immediately creates a stress-laden atmosphere in the house! - Despite good food and a nice TV peace and quiet will be lost! - This means that all this depends more on consciousness than on material things.

Through hate and violence world peace can not be achieved! - Even in the individual sphere happiness can not be realized in anger! - Anger, jealousy, impatience, and hate are the real trouble makers, and problems can not be solved with them! - Even though success can be there for a while, hatred and anger will only create further difficulties.

A person who practices religion is like a soldier in combat! - He fights with inner enemies: ignorance, anger, attachment and pride are the ultimate enemies - they are not outside, but within us - and must be combated with the weapons of wisdom and concentration ...

If you want to know what you have done in the past, look at your present body - if you want to know what will happen to you in the future - look at your present state of consciousness ... (Dalai Lama)
