What has always bothered me is the concern of the Americans of the day when Haiti became the first African Independent State in the Southern Hemisphere, run by former slaves - the (Americans) being afraid that their own slaves might take a cue from - and they vowed to make sure that Haiti is not recognized - and pays for becoming independent...
Toussaint L'Ouverture could not celebrate his victory of January 1, 1804, because he had been captured by deceit - and sent to a French prison to "die a slow death from cold and misery" - in the words of a 19th century French historian...
