I heard the door open one night and opened my eyes to see the flash light heading for my bed ... she had seen that I was awake ... I thought I could not stand another beating but I would never give in to the evilness of the Sisters ... she said: "Come," and took me by the arm ... as we walked down the hall she was silent ... we reached the end of the hall and turned down the stairs. I thought she is going to push me down and then say that I would have fallen down ... I grabbed the rail and hung on to it ... we came to the lower floor and she steered me toward the common room ... as we entered I could not believe my eyes but there stood my sister...
I pulled me out of the Sister's grasp and ran to my sister and hugged her tightly ... she hugged me back ... Then she said: "I know it's late Sister but I would like to take my sister tonight, if you would be so kind as to bring her clothes" ... I was so happy ... the Sister left the room and Jennie said: "I felt that you needed me and I had to come, Bernard is out in the truck, he drives for a truck company now, and he said that you could come home" ... I could hardly speak for such happiness...
They had moved to Spryfield a little ways from Halifax ... they lived in an apartment on the ground floor ... we crept in, Bernard's mom was there for looking after the baby while they were gone ... Jennie said: "Go to bed we will talk in the morning" ... I slipped into the big bed with Keah, she was sound asleep ... I curled up and closed my eyes smiling to myself ... it felt so good to be away from the home...
I was baby sitting one night when the door opened, and there stood a soldier ... dark, taciturn and smiling at me ... "Hi," he said still looking and smiling ... "It's okay, you are baby sitting my sister's kids, my name is Danny, you met my mother at the bus stop, she told me that you were pretty and also had Native blood, so I came to see for myself" ... "I am home on leave because of my mother's death"...
