My dreams that night were filled with hiding ... you know in dreams when you cannot run and everything moves slowly ... I kept trying to cover up so I would not be found and woke several times pulling the blanket over me ... Mary hugged me and I fell asleep again ... I woke with the sound of wood crackling in the wood stove Mary stood making breakfast ... she turned and smiled ... come on lazy bones let's eat and get the wood in, weather is changing and it's cool ... breakfast was warm and good Mary just looked at me and smiled ... she was quiet and I liked that ... she never mentioned my step-father's visit... 

A couple of weeks passed and Mary mentioned school for me she said a school named Model Farm was just a ways down the road and she would take me there and come back for me ... I was not happy about school I was afraid of everyone ... I loved to learn and read, but I did not want to go to school... 

I sat quietly ... we were sitting on the sew bench together talking when a car drove in the yard ... two women got out of the car and came toward us ... Mary stood up and waited for them to come over to where we were ... I felt like I was frozen I could not move ... my heart started to pound again ... They asked: Are you Mary?" She answered "yes" ... I have seen her hands tremble and my heart beat faster ... I got up and held on tight ... They said they were from the children's aid and were given to understand that she had a run away child...
