Here Muhammad Yunus had the idea to give micro-loans at favorable rates to poor people - In 1983 it became a bank. The borrowers of Grameen Bank possess 98% of the shares. 7% are owned by the Government of Bangladesh. Since the founding of the bank loans amounting to 2.75 billion euros have been granted. EUR 2.55 billion has already been repaid...
In 2006, Yunus was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his idea. Today, the Grameen Bank has 1176 branches and 8 million customers, many "follower-institutes" have now sprung up. This brings the danger that India's slum dwellers take out loans with which they repay their debts to other micro-banks - Yunus' concept of micro-loans has been successfully adapted in France, Germany or the USA...
