If art teaches anything (to the artist, in the 1. place), it is privateness of the human condition - Being the most ancient as well as the most literal form of private enterprise - it fosters in a man, knowingly or unwittingly, a sense of his uniqueness - thus turning him from a social animal into an autonomous “I”...

I am not appealing for the replacement of the state with a library - although this thought has visited me frequently - but there is no doubt in my mind that, had we been choosing our leaders on the basis of their reading experience (see dali48 and Reading and Writing etc. - d.48) and not of their political programs - there would be much less grief on earth...
