Interview Part 1
No question: The water is scarce! - But how will we deal with that in the future? - Interview with the French economist and writer Erik Orsenna for World Water Day on March, 22. Dwindling supplies, increasing consumption, climate change expands the dry-lands! - Today over 1 billion people are missing (about 1 / 6 = 17% of the world population - without "fauna & flora" etc - d.48) access to drinking water! ...
ARTE: If water (e.g. Haiti etc.) is scarce?
EO: Water is the most important of all raw materials (and second in comparison to the air of breathing etc - d.48)!
ARTE: Water can also serve as leverage!
E.O: Of course! ... Because Turkey e.g. controls the upper reaches of the Euphrates and Tigris ...
Through ailing water (-pipes) large amounts of drinking water is lost around the world! ...
E.O: In 25 years, 350 million people in Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia will fight for the Nile water (my proposal: seawater desalination + pipelines etc - d.48)! ...
ARTE: What are other risk areas? ...
E.O: Southern Mediterranean ... Northern Mexico and the Western Himalaya ... India (Ganges and Indus) ... China, where it is too much in the South, and too little water in the North! ... (ARTE, 3 / 2010)
Wikipedia
Interview Part2
Arte-Interview with Erik Orsenna
Arte: What place impressed you the most on your research trip on the water?
EO: Israel - for better or for worse, because Israel steals the Palestinians 80% of the water! ... For good, I am counting the Israeli research in the field of wastewater reuse, water recycling, genetically modified crops with low water or the detoxification! ... Arte: About the water spreading diseases, water pollution and flooding cost the lives of 2.5 until 5 million people annually, is it? EO: The real problems are malaria and cholera! ... Not to mention the lack of treatment plants! - 40% of the world's population have no toilets! ...
Arte: Are you optimistic or pessimistic?
EO: Optimistic (in my opinion, there is no single reason for this optimism etc. - d.48), because the problem is less water than the ignorance of the real politics! ... (ARTE, 3 / 2010)
