01/07/2011 - Interpretation of dali48
With sexual maturity after 10-20 years, the eel is planted away exclusively in the Saragossa Sea south of Bermuda. He swims about 5.000 kilometers far back from the European inland rivers and dies after spawning. Eel cannot reproduce in captivity! Each farmed eel is taken from free-living eels in the sea and the game population is missing the followers. The population of the eel has already decreased by 95% (i.e. a remainder of 5% to extinction, etc. - d.48)! - Every eel on the plate endangers the survival of the whole species ... The Sargasso Sea is a region in the gyre in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean. It is bounded on the west by the Gulf Stream; on the north, by the North Atlantic Current; on the east, by the Canary Current; and on the south, by the North Atlantic Equatorial Current. This system of ocean currents forms the North Atlantic Gyre. All the currents deposit the marine plants and refuse they carry into this sea ...
Christopher Columbus and his men also noted the Saragasso Sea, and brought reports of the masses of seaweed on the surface ...
The Sargasso Sea also plays a major role in the migration of the European eel and the American eel. The larvae of both species hatch there and go to Europe or the East Coast of North America. Later in life, they try to return to the Sargasso Sea to lay eggs ...
Owing to surface currents, the Sargasso accumulates a high concentration of non-biodegradable plastic waste! - The huge North Atlantic Refuse Patch in the area is similar to another ocean phenomenon, the Great Pacific Refuse Patch! ...
The European Eel is a critically endangered species. Since the 1970s, the numbers of eels reaching Europe is thought to have declined by around 90% (possibly even 98%)! - Contributing factors include over-fishing, parasites such as Anguillicola crassus, barriers to migration such as hydroelectric plants, and natural changes in the North Atlantic oscillation, Gulf Stream and the North Atlantic drift. Recent work suggests that PCB pollution may be a factor in the decline! ...
Eels have been important sources of food both as adults (including the famous jellied eels of East London) and as glass eels. Glass eel fishing using basket traps has been of significant economic value in many river estuaries on the western seaboard of Europe ...
In captivity European eels can become very old! ...
In 2010, Greenpeace International has added the European eel to its seafood red list! - "The Greenpeace International seafood red list is a list of fish that are commonly sold in supermarkets around the world, and which have a very high risk of being sourced from unsustainable fisheries! ... (Wikipedia)
The European Eel, Anguilla anguilla, is listed as 'Critically Endangered' on the IUCN Red List of Threatened SpeciesTM. It spends most of its life in European rivers which flow into the Atlantic, Mediterranean and Baltic seas, and migrates to the western sub-tropical Atlantic where it breeds.
