Global warming is the rise in the average temperature of Earth's atmosphere and oceans since the late 19th century, and its projected continuation. Since the early 20th century, Earth's mean surface temperature has increased by about 0.8 °C (1.4 °F), with about two-thirds of the increase occurring since 1980... An increase in global temperature will cause sea levels to rise and will change the amount and pattern of precipitation, as well as cause a probable expansion of subtropical deserts. Warming is expected to be strongest in the Arctic and would be associated with the continuing retreat of glaciers, permafrost and sea ice... 2010 was also an El Niño year... 2011 was the warmest La Niña year in the period from 1950 to 2011, and was close to 1997 which was not at the lowest point of the cycle... The Northern Hemisphere warms faster - than the Southern Hemisphere because... Fossil fuel burning has produced about three-quarters of the increase in CO2 from human activity over the past 20 years - The rest of this increase is caused mostly by changes in land-use, particularly deforestation... Population growth - were the main drivers of increases in greenhouse gas emissions... Increased tropospheric ozone - has had a somewhat larger warming effect... Carbon dioxide has a lifetime of a century or more - and as such, changes in particulate concentrations will only delay climate changes due to carbon dioxide... Observed Arctic shrinkage has been faster than that predicted - Precipitation increased proportional to atmospheric humidity, and hence significantly faster than global climate models predict... Partial deglaciation of the Greenland ice sheet, and possibly the West Antarctic Ice Sheet - could contribute 4–6 metres (13 to 20 ft) or more to sea level rise... Snow cover area and sea ice extent are expected to decrease - with the Arctic expected to be largely ice-free in September by 2037... The heat waves in Texas and the 2003 European heat wave - would not have occurred without global warming... These temperatures are expected to exacerbate the hydro-logical cycle - with more intense droughts and floods... Overall, it is expected that climate change will result - in the extinction of many species and reduced diversity of ecosystems... Warming above 3 °C could result in crop yields falling in temperate regions, - leading to a reduction in global food production... In small islands and mega-deltas, inundation as a result of sea level rise - is expected to threaten vital infrastructure and human settlements... Many countries, both developing and developed, are aiming to use - cleaner, less polluting technologies... In general, it seems likely that climate change will impose - greater damages and risks in poorer regions... At the 15th UNFCCC Conference of the Parties, held in 2009 at Copenhagen - several UNFCCC Parties produced the Copenhagen Accord... The 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16) was held at Cancún in 2010... (Wikipedia)

Instead of waiting for the national leaders to act, we should invite them to work together and to give us permission to clean nature and to build model projects in no-man lands: to plant trees - to clean water - and to produce energy (see wind & solar etc. - d.48)...

At the Copenhagen conference the small island states and the vulnerable countries showed that they realize they face major risk right now - and that the goals everyone goes for around the world should be those that make the vulnerable nations safe. But the West Antarctic is now melting in a way that will cause a quarter to a half a metre sea rise by 2100 - with current temperatures and CO2 levels (see http://tinyurl.com/ybclefn). Only the restoration of a safe climate will protect the vulnerable nations effective - by refreezing the Arctic and Antarctic and cooling the ocean... ( Philip Sutton)

UNDP’s environmental strategy focuses on effective water governance including access to water supply and sanitation, access to sustainable energy services, Sustainable land management to combat desertification and land degradation, conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, and policies to control emissions of harmful pollutants and ozone-depleting substances. UNDP's Equator Initiative office biennially offers the Equator Prize to recognize outstanding indigenous community efforts to reduce poverty through the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, and thus making local contributions to achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)...
