In this monograph on "The Mystery of Masochism," he (Leon Wurmser) has left his previous reflection on the shame-guilt dilemma, - a comprehensive account of the links with forms of sadomasochism - as an escape from mental pain, - to help the patient out of the "vicious circle" of his "super-ego-compulsion," and to experience his analyst as a man and a new meeting-partner. - Authors dealing with "superego"-problematic: Ibsen, Nietzsche, T. Mann. - How can we understand that someone can draw pleasure and even sexual pleasure from pain, - and therefore even directly searches such suffering, - attracts it and challenges it? - How can the painful person pay attention to himself? - Should he not be ashamed of the fact that he finds pleasure in his shame? - The Catholic faith teaches the strict humility, that one must have no will of his own, - and that one is not worthy if one has his own free will and does not surrender oneself. I had the ideal picture of myself how I could work best: I had to react without feelings, only through logic. - I had no ability to cope with my experience. - The heavier and earlier (see e.g. premature birth etc. - d.48), and the longer lasting the traumatization, the more archaic and overwhelming are the affects, - and the less able to be understood in words and symbols. - The heavier the internal conflicts, the more radical the defense efforts, the more brutal is the conscience, the more powerful the ideal demands, - and the greater the pretension, the demands of size, the desperate search for external ideals, the narcissistic stigmata. - Feelings of shame and guilt, conflicts of loyalty, questions of resentment, that is, the feeling of injustice, - and finally, defense against the superego ...
