Am Nachmittag des 11. März 2011 ereignete sich im Pazifik ein Seebeben, in dessen Folge ein Tsunami die Ostküste Japans traf. Dieser löste eine Unfallserie im Atomkraftwerk Fukushima Daiichi mit Kernschmelzen in drei Reaktorblöcken aus. Dabei kam es zu erheblichen Freisetzungen von Radionukliden in die Umwelt.
