But Böll's homeless are not ill-fated individuals or human wreckage cast up outside the bulwarks of society. He tells of a society without a roof over its head, a derailed, displaced epoch, standing on every street corner with hand outstreched, begging for the charity of a kindred spirit and human fellowship. This is the situation underlying Böll's Ästhetik des Humanen. He writes about what every human being seeks in order to lead a human life, in little things - as in great, about "das Wohnen, die Nachbarschaft - und die Heimat, das Geld - und die Liebe, Religion - und Mahlzeiten", to quote his own enumeration... - With its whole register from satire and high-spirited parody to deep suffering, this is a form of passionately engaged aesthetics and it also contains his literary program. As early as December 1945, I accompanied my wife and a few relatives in their return from evacuation in the countryside to Cologne, where over the years we settled down in a destroyed house. I started to write again, while simultaneously working on repairing the destroyed house, I started my studies again - merely formally, because of proof of occupation was necessary to obtain a food rationing card. From 1946 to 1949 I published short stories... - After a first invitation to a meeting of the "Gruppe 47" in 1951, I met many German postwar writers with whom I afterwards became friends. I owe particular thanks to Hans Werner Richter, Alfred Andersch and many others that I cannot name in detail... - In 1942 I married Annemarie Cech, who has been irreplaceable, not only as fellow experiencer and fellow sufferer in the fascist drama during the Nazi reign in Germany, but also for her critical awareness for language. On the train to the EU Parliament, the Italian Senate, the Vatican and House of Parliament during the Easter holiday. And on Friday I’ll participate in the school strike in Rome.
