Interpretation of dali48
When Martin Luther had dismantled the saints for his new doctrine, he had a hard time with St. Nicholas (270 – 343)! - He was so popular that even the followers of Luther didn't easily give him away. - The Protestant Dutch defy this point of the reformer till today. - In Germany, however, Luther took away the gift of St. Nicholas and transferred it on Christmas, where there were no gifts by then, - and the German Protestants followed their reformer! ...
The Catholics, however, insisted on their newly designed Nicholas and the traditions. - Did the saint never appear in person till then, but had only secretely filled the boots (filling custom) in the evening before St. Nicholas, it was decided now, to let Nicholas appear even personally (visit custom). - Had not the reform Council of Trent required the bishops to visit each of their communities at least once in 5 years? Then, Saint Nicholas could also come as a bishop and personally in every family. - As a Visitor, he should look after the families, praise the good and warn the bad guys! ...
His knowledge of Nicholas refers to the "Golden Book" (in some places, the book has already dualized to a "Golden" and a "black book"). - The idea of heavenly books is an Oriental tradition. The "Book of Life" opens the "divine court." It contains the life's fate. - So Santa Claus knows, what makes trembling the delinquents in front of him! ...
All of this would still be tolerable, because a saint does not beat the bad guys, of course. - But unfortunately he has a pretty lousy companion. - He is accompanied by a fear-inspiring figure, a black guy with a backpack on his shoulder. He is situated at the chain, so that the visit of the approaching Bishop is announced from afar, and some adults still recalls how the then-bad conscience had put pressure in the stomach! ...
This presentation is unique. Knecht Ruprecht, as the official name of the boy is, reveals his origin by its name: "Precht," was named formerly the devil. - The evil lies in the chain that is held by the good one. - The evil can not do whatever it wants, because it is used by good one, to enforce the good behaviour, - a clue which we should pass on to our Frisian neighbors who have been arguing for years about whether the there called "Swarte Piet" would not be racist. - Their respect of hell has been lost! ...
Saint Nicholas has a unique message, - in contrast to his meaningless imitation the Koofmich, called Santa Claus. - Nicholas does not give gifts, for the gift-giving's sake, but to keep the way open to the sky. - People tell his legend, that he has given to three young women, the dowry so that they could marry, and didn't have to prostitute themselves. - His gifting of the children remembered not only because it was originally the children at least on this one day, that they should experience what it means when the sky meets the earth. - And the adults should know that property is given only on time, - and everyone is once accountable to what he has done so useful! ... (M. Becker-Huberti)
St. Nicholas (270 - 343) was born as a Greek, in Asia Minor during the third century in the city of Patara (Lycia et Pamphylia), which was a port on the Mediterranean Sea, and lived in Myra, Lycia (part of modern-day Demre, Turkey), at a time when the region was Greek in its heritage, culture, and outlook and was part of the Roman diocese of Asia. - He was the only son of wealthy Christian parents. He was very religious from an early age. - He died 6 December 343 (aged 73) in Myra, Lycia. - He is the patron saint of children, sailors, fishermen, merchants, the falsely accused, prostitutes, repentant thieves, pharmacists, archers, pawnbrokers, and students etc. - in various countries in the Balkans and Eastern Europe, as well as in parts of Western Europe. - He is also the patron saint of Aberdeen, Amsterdam, Bari, Fribourg, Liverpool, Lorraine, etc.! ...
