Part 38... by Golden Snow

I woke with the sun shining in the small window. I turned over in bed to get my eyes away from the bright sun ... there stood the Sister who had beaten and abused me ... I was so afraid and sore that I did not know what to do ... she stood looking at me, then she said: "Did I not tell you to do as you were told, you would not be here now" ... I did not answer ... she said: "Maybe next time you will behave yourself" ... I knew I would never do as she wanted ... I raised up to sit but she pushed me back ... I cried out in pain...

Another Sister came in and said: "I will care for her, you go to prayer" ... I thought to myself that she needed prayer ... I always thought Nuns were gentle and kind ... but in this place they were not ... she left without answering ... the Sister asked me to sit up and she looked at my eye which was still swollen almost shut ... she came in with something and washed my eye ... "You can have supper tonight but you will remain in this room until you feel better, you had quite a fall, Golden, your neck and eye took the worse beating, the stairs are not safe in the dark, where ever were you going" ... I tried to tell her that I didn't fall but she said you must have walked in your sleep...

I knew then that I was not allowed to say what really had happened to me ... I remained in the sick room for a few more days, then was sent back to my normal duties and told to be careful at night and stay away from the stairs in the dark ... the girls were happy to see me in class the next day and sat with me for lunch ... they never asked what had happened to me although I knew that they had seen the bruises and my black eye...
