Part 35... by Golden Snow

I had just fallen to sleep when I heard someone crying softy in the bed next to mine ... I sat up and listened ... I got up and went over and asked her if I could help. She cried harder ... I sat down and she sobbed softly this time “I hate it here", she said ... and she began to sob again ...Shelly was twelve and had pretty brown eyes and brown hair ... she was a very quiet girl ... I asked her what had happened when she was out with the Sister...

The work for the girls of my age was hard. We had to scrub floors on our hands and knees, and when we got the long halls it seemed we would never get done ... they were long and wide doors leading to the class rooms, bathrooms and dinning room ... our bedrooms were on the upper level ... we all kept our own rooms clean ... as well we had to clean the Sisters' rooms ... There were many nights of the girls which were leaving and coming back to cry themselves to sleep ... I was naive to the fact and never had heard of...

My night came after I spent an hour in an interview with one of the Sisters ... she was so nice to me and was asking if I had any concerns. She even gave me a candy bar ... she said that my school report and conduct were good ... she said that she would help me with my spelling when she would have time ... I thought that this was kind and said: "Thank you" ... When supper was over one night and our prayer time was over we were sent to our rooms to prepare for bed ... washing up and getting into the provided night gowns ... we were allowed to have one book per week to read, signing it in and out ... I chose a History book...
