Part20

I remember the day very well, we sat in the kitchen and the warm sun shone through the window ... Mrs. Lenard reached for my hand and said: "I know we will do alright together" ... "I will tell you about Jeanie, she is in her room Golden but she is not reading. Jeanie is a Special child that will never grow up. She is 29 years old. I love her very much, she is my daughter. I have two daughters, one is away at school in Toronto. I will need you to have patience with Jeanie. She can be very mean when she wants to. I will show you how to handle her. I am not well and I need help with her so I can rest. I have cancer, and the treatments are hurtful. I become very tired" ...

I was feeling a little scared at the thought of looking after someone as old as Jeanie ... but if Mrs. Lenard thought I could I would try ... we sat for awhile talking and she gave me cookies and milk ... she heard a movement in the hall and stood up ... into the kitchen came Jeanie ... she was very unsteady on her feet, and when she saw me her face twisted, and she let out a yell ... it scared me to death! Mrs. Lenard touched my arm ... "Please, she said, do not look frightened" ... "It will be ok" ... Jeanie came towards us, and in a high voice she yelled: "Bad, bad" ... Lenard said: "No Jeanie good, good" ... she leaned against the table and stared at me ... then she pounded the table with all her might ... I really did not believe that I could do this ... Mrs. Lenard calmed her daughter down with a soft voice ... she then sat down at the table and continued to stare at me ... I felt a little scared but tried moving my eyes away at times...

I remembered my uncle Lewis saying: "When you meet a wild animal face to face, never stare but close and open your eyes slowly, it shows you are not meaning them any harm" ... I knew Jeanie was not an animal, but she was wild ... so I thought I would try it... (Golden Snow)
