"Yes, one must ascribe genius to Chopin - in the fullest sense of the word. He is not merely a virtuoso, he is a poet, he can bring us into view the poetry that lives in his soul - he is composer, and nothing is like the pleasure that he gives us when he is sitting at the piano and improvises - He is then neither Polish nor French, nor German, he will then reveal a much higher origin - one sees then, that he comes from the land of Mozart, Raphael, Goethe. His true fatherland is the dream land of poetry." - Heinrich Heine (1797 - 1856) in "On the French stage," - in 1837. Heine had come to Paris in 1831, in the same year as Chopin. They knew each other - Chopin loved Heine's witty nature - but rejected his cynicism... (ARTE, 1 / 2010)
